| | okay | ] | Hi all, finally some time for the updates in my life!
Firstly, I'm halfway through the "In Odd We Trust" sequel, called "Odd Is On Our Side". It's still going to be out just before Halloween in 2010, so there's little point in talking about it now, when it's not even Halloween 2009. I've also finished a series of short one-shots (in May) for a book called "Boy's Book of Positive Quotations", which is exactly as it says - a book of positive quotations. It's not yet out on the shelves as far as I know, but I'll post something up when it is.
Yen Plus Anthology: What's really post-worthy is that I have a 33-page short story called "Forget-Me-Not" coming up in the July edition of Yen Plus, the manga anthology from Yen Press. It's a story set in Mythical Ancient China, and concerns the adventures of a "Scent Merchant". To find out what that is, read the story! It should be out in stores this month.
Here are the first 2 pages of the story, and some concept art of the "Scent Merchant" himself.

This story was finished way back in January, with the creative process having started in September 2008. I guess most people might have guessed by now - this means that the Yen Plus anthology is accepting short story submissions, of about 30 pages in length, and has been planning to for some time. Buy the July issue to find out more! |

Hi Queenie! :D This looks great - you adapted your style for the ancient China setting beautifully - I can't wait to read this! (as soon as I'm back in the US) Keep going, your productivity is very inspirational :)
Thanks, Tacto. :) Hope to see you around at the Tuesday chats!

They started printing a page requesting those short story submissions in the third issue of Yen+ but only from professional artists. But that could be down to marketing reasons, featuring work form established creative talent could likely attract an audience from the fanbase of aforementioned creative talent.
But what happens to the thirty page stories after they've featured in Yen+? Will they reprinted in a collected volume? I'll have to wait a week or two until my copy of this months issue ships to me!

Their submisisons page doesn't specify professional artists only, but perhaps it's only for the anthology. Tangent question, they're on issue 12 of Yen+ now, correct? I actually didn't know they had an anthology; do B&N or other bookstores carry it?

Yen Plus magazine IS the anthology I'm referring to. Perhaps I shouldn't call it an anthology? :O

I don't know anything about what's going to happen to the story after it's featured... I doubt it will be collected into something unless other people send in submissions. Perhaps if more artists did short stories, they would put it all together in a trade and sell it?

"Scent Merchant", inspired by Perfume: The Story of a Murderer I presume?
I loved the "Perfume" movie like crazy, but this character was actually more inspire by the Medicine Seller in "Mononoke".
I enjoyed the story; well done. I hope Yen Press invites you back for more features in the future. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. :) Nice to hear you enjoyed it. :)
I am so sad that my Yen Plus subscription got cancelled, especially after seeing this :( It looks great!
Not easy to get access to this magazine when living in Europe... sigh...
Aww... too bad. :( I live in Australia, so I know exactly what you mean. :p
I like the way the scent follows the panel flow. It's a nice touch.
Mononoke meets Ancient China is also quite a refreshing setting.
Hey, thanks. :) I had fun drawing this.
And I'm afraid that despite the Ancient Chinese setting, the story's nothing like Mononoke. The Medicine Seller is a full-time exorcist and a part-time medicine seller, while the Scent Merchant is a full-time... merchant. :D Turns out it's more fun to sell stuff than exorcise things. LOL
Well, I'm sure you'll make it interesting on your own way. Keep up the good work!
I recently bought all volumes of the Finnish edition of The Dreaming. I still like the original-language version better as the Lovecraft thingy didn't get across quite as smoothly as I'd hoped, but I'm sure you'll be happy to know that it's a very good translation nevertheless. Too bad Egmont decided against the paper dolls...
Egmont recently picked up Hollow Fields too, if you didn't happen to know. I'm glad we're getting quality world manga up here too, as the local comic stores no longer usually carry the english editions of those with the depression and everything... In Finland the locally published manga is sold in supermarkets and grocery stores among magazines and other comics. | |
