Yay! Thank you Miss Chan! Well at least someone still cares about this competition, even if Tokyopop doesn't seem to have the time to do any work on it. It seems rather weird of them to do this, then decide to restructure and not tell the finalist at all. *sighs* Makes me wonder if there's going to be any Rising anything from them. Which would really stink because there's a lot of talented artist and writers out there just looking for the chance to have their work seen.
Thank you again. *hugs* That reminds me, they mentioned that the winners would get 500 dollars for first prize, 100 for second and a 100 for third. The curious thing is, if they're not going to announce the winners, then do you think that they'll at all keep this part of the agreement. Wouldn't that be breaking the contract if they didn't send the prizes out?
Lucky people in Melbourne. *thinks* A pity you can't come out the the states *cough*Chicago's nice this time of year*coughs* and do some book signing out here. ^_^
>_< i just heard back from TOKYOPOP, and they said they're going to announce the winners this week on their website, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. And... *sigh*. Things are pretty messed up with the company right now, I don't know what to say. Darn it - I plain forgot they promised monetary prizes too - I have no clue if they can follow through. At least they oughta announce the winners first. That's what I'm hoping for.
I'm going to San Diego this year though. :D Missed Chicago by a wide margin, but someday, someday...
Well hopefully someday. :D I'll probably be first in line for an autograph. Wow, well at least they finally got back to you on all of it. I can understand the length of time that it took for them to get everything settled, but the least they could have done was let the finalist and you know that they haven't forgotten about the contest and such. *sighs*
And it's okay about the prizes, I was more excited about the drawings anyway. I just hope the next time they do this, they have everything in their house cleaned first, then have a contest.
Because of the reshuffling of employees, the people who used to handle this are now in a different company! Yeah, it's all messed up. :(
I hope there won't be a "next time", in terms of TOKYOPOP falling apart and getting restructured. :P
Woo!! I messaged you. I hope I did it right and that you got it. I'm so curious to see what everyone wrote!! As I was writing mine, I kept worrying "What if how I'm writing the characters isn't how Ms Chan envisioned them?" Because I know I took a little liberty with Mary Spector. My biggest fear was offending. :/
I was curious too, as to if Tokyopop is just going to pretend none of this ever happened... I think I read on their official rules, they reserved the right now to award anyone, anything at all. I was so excited because it was their first Prose contest.
Houston is a nice place for book signings too, ;) Though, it's awful hot this time of year.
Yep, I got your email, and I've amended my LJ post. Thanks for sending me your details. And yeah, you DID take serious liberty with Mary, but it was great!! I really liked it. It made me see Mary in a way I haven't before, so it was real good for me. Not offended at all.
I just heard back from TP, and they said they're going to announce the winners of the competition at the end of this week. It's on their site... so I'm keeping my fingers crossed about it. :P
Personally I was rather worried I might mess up the characters, so I just figured I'd go with the themes. Like Sundowner2, I was more worried about how you would see the work, and if it was way off of how you envisioned the characters. I know that, from my own perspective as a writer, I get a bit nervous when I let my friends do little short stories with my characters. I worry that they'll wind up pulling off something that's rather not so good ala some of the fiction writing at sites like fanfiction.net. I just hope that the story did follow the themes that you created.
*crosses fingers as well* I wonder if they sent notice to this to the finalist? And yay, you're only missing what two people. I guess your call out did work. *grins*
Yeah, I guess people DO read my blog. Yay! ^o^
And I always find fanfiction interesting - no matter how much they change the characters. I like hanging around on fanfiction.net (embaressing confession), because I just like seeing people be creative and be inspired by the things they like. I'm actually pretty hard to offend, on that front. :P
I'm very glad that you wern't offended! This is the only time I've ever written something using another's characters, and I felt so awkward, almost like it was a crime to take such liberty using another'swords and scenes and people, because it's only natural that to a creator, the character and everything else is THEIRS. It's their hard work, and someone, or someplace that is very real to them, very personal and really does exist with a distinct personality, so when someone changes those things, it opens up the possibility to change things a little in the creator's mind, which isn't always something they want done.
Great news about Tokyopop, I'm really excited and wish everyone the best of luck! I feel like I've gotten to know you and Dark Spell Master a little better, lol, just from visiting here so often!
I know the feeling Sundowner, it's been a real pleasure getting to know a writer who's also dealing what I've been dealing with. And I totally agree with you, when you create a character you see them one way, where as other people might not see what you see. Which I guess opens up the whole thing about interpretation and such, and like you said it sometimes is not what a creator wants, especially if they've worked very hard in getting THEIR character right.
Haha, I've been writing fanfiction myself for "In Odd We Trust", using Dean Koontz's characters and universe. Granted, it's official fanfiction because Dean has to approve it, but it still felt like fanfiction, LOL.
Anyway, I always like to see people being creative and inspired by the things they like, so I'm pretty hard to offend on the fanfiction front. :P I mean, I read alot of fanfiction.net stuff myself. I don't mind it people completely rewrite things at all - I think it gives an interesting window into their minds and shows the thing they like.
*nods* I know what you mean, especially if people get inspired by the work and wind up writing some great stories. The only reason I get nervous is when, for example, someone takes a character and totally and completely does a 180 on the character's personality for no reason at all. Or goes out of their way to create *shudders* Mary sues. I'm all for indulging an idea, but sometimes they're way over the top. Or for that matter, gets actually nasty when you try to give them fair criticism of their work.
I actually have a few stories on Fanfiction.net, but I always fall into the rut of never finishing them because I wind up not having the time, or I'm busy writing the original stuff for the online comic that my friend and I are working on. *Hopefully we can get it up and running soon. I don't care what anyone says, comic script writing is HARD!* XD
Lucky you! I can't wait to read that book. I hope Dean enjoyed it as much as we will. Out of curiosity, did you ever write fanfiction and put it online? Because I know that there are some writers that won't read it because they say it will influence their ideas and then they'll feel like their stealing from another writer. And I know Anne Rice apparently doesn't want fanfiction up at all.
No, I've never written fanfiction. :P I prefer to write my own original stories, though I like to read other people's fanfiction. Oddly enough, I had a bit of trouble getting myself to read "The Dreaming" stories that were sent to me for the competition, but once I got into it, I was fine. :)
I think all writers are nervous about reading other people's work that are based on their own. :)
Has anyone been able to find just where on Tokyopop's site the anouncment is? I have the page with the rules and announcment of the contest, but that's all I've seen, and there are no updates there.
I went there too. I haven't seen anything except the whole new, "Write a manga pilot" thing. While I would love to try for that, I'm a bit hesitant considering what just happened with this.
I'm hoping by the end of the week they have something and don't just shove the contest in some back corner of their site.
What's bothering me the most is that there are people leaving comments and no one is answering their questions at all. You would think someone would note to redirect here. :(
Can't edit but ARRRGH!!! They haven't announced the winners for this contest and they're already working on the Manga Pilots and the Dramacon competition! I was at least expecting something of a note on the competition page, saying they picked the winners and all, but not even that. T_T *sighs*
*sigh* Man, I wish they wouldn't pack so many noodles into their cups. Personally, I'll be putting the winners up on my website on 1st July irregardless (AND linking to the works themselves).
I'll also be handing out original pieces of "In Odd We Trust" art as the prizes (and also a signed copy of the book). The Dean Koontz book just went back to press yesterday (it came out the day before), so original art from that story is bound to worth money! LOL
In Odd We Trust sounds so interesting... I can't wait to get a copy of that! I've actually never read anything Dean Koontz, I don't know much abut what he writes, but since he's been mentioned so many times in your blog, I mght have to pick up something from the library to try.
So many posts I don't have time to read quite all, since I'm so busy packing, but I was wondering... are you a HP Lovecraft fan, since you used one of his bits in The Dreaming? My husband was listening to an audio today of some of his stories, and it reminded me of the series.
Hoho, I'm a big fan of HP Lovecraft!! You're totally right about that! :)
And Dean's a suspense writer. You don't need to know anything about Dean Koontz's books or even the "Odd Thomas" novels to enjoy "In Odd We Trust". :) By all means - check it out.
I have tried to actually read Lovecraft before, namely the mythos works, and have yet to fully wrap my mind around them. I know that a lot of writers tend to use his creatures, even if they're not technically his mythos gods, but they have similar characteristic. Honestly I thought you were a poe fan with the way the Dreaming worked out. *laughs*
Oh, thanks for pointing that out. I've left a note pointing folks here. :)
Thanks for announcing the finalist (Congrats to all of you!)! Looking forward to seeing the TP announcement as well.
Thank you for the congradulations. *grins*
Queenie, I saw your post and told the right folks here at TOKYOPOP. Mrco jumped on it. Thanks for putting it out there. With so many of us gone, we're all backed up in contacting creators. Jeremy
Thanks, Jeremy. :) I figured TOKYOPOP was busy - I'm glad Marco is working on it. It's been so long since the end of the contest, and the sooner it's announced, the better for everyone involved! :D
Thanks for suggesting that. I'll see what happens on the show. :) And hopefully the winners of the Writing Competition will be announced at the end of this week! :)

Hey everyone! DON'T WORRY! I work for TOKYOPOP and we are indeed going to announce the winners tomorrow. We're so sorry about the delay, it's been totally zany out here, but we're on it and so excited to share. I'll post a link to tomorrow when I get it up.
All the best, Kasia at TOKYOPOP
Oh thank you thank you! I was trying to find it on the site. Sometimes it's hard to find the stuff you're looking for on it, becuase of all the blogs that aren't related. A link would be great,.

Hello, um... sorry I guess I sort of messed up on my entry. My name is Chelsea M. Smith (18), the writer of An End, from The Woodlands, TX. I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations to you. I can't wait to see your style Chelsea. *grins*
I'm still laughing at the fact that my story The Coffin got so far, considering the fact that I wrote it in only two days. I was so stuck on what to do for the story that I know there were a lot of mistakes in there. That would be my fault, but I'm thrilled that I got that far on it. Thank you Queenie for what you said about the piece. I would have gone farther into the coffin itself, in fact I would have liked to, but unfortunately time wound up killing me for getting it in on the deadline.
I am, most definitely, taking what you said, Miss Chan and using it for my next story. Thank you so much for actually taking the time to help in judging this. *grins* I hope we get to do this again sometime with another one of your stories.
Congrats to the winners!! I knew my ending wasn't as strong as I had wanted, or as strong as it should have been, that's why I was so surprised I was a finalist. Next time I'm going to see if I can get more help watching the baby so I'm not having to write with him on my lap, lol. That was pretty rough!
It's good to find out the news, and I'm so glad for the winners, I hope that I get to see the winning stories soon! They sound quite interesting!!!
Thank you so much Ms Chan for poking people and reminding them about the contest!!
You WILL get to see the stories - I'll be posting another post about the winners over the weekend. :)
Thanks to all for entering!! Thanks to you for hanging around here and poking me back! say hi to your baby for me too. :)
Wow Sundowner we had the same problem. I felt my ending was totally weak compared to the start. I should have started a lot sooner and tried to actually work on it while it was forming in my head rather then rushing the day before it had to go out. *sighs*
Next time I'm definitely forcing myself to write when I get a free minute, instead of procrastinating and worrying how perfect the story is going to be.
No worries!! :D Thankyou for entering the competition - it was great reading all your stories, and now the winners have been announced, I'll post up another blog entry over the weekend.
Hey, thanks Chelsea. Congrats on your entry!! :)
Tokyopop didn't announce the winners? That's retarded... And a random question- with the red text of your entry do you mean for people to send YOU their entires? Like- in the ail to Austrelia? And is there a possibility of Tokyopop dissapearing? That would suck... really bad...
Anywhos I got another random question- are the entry winners going to be viewable for the public? Just curious~
I've asked a bunch of random pointless crap! Sorry about that! "o >.< o"
Nope, TP just announced the winners. I posted it on my blog (correction above). Don't know whether TP will disappear though. :(
Nah, I mean for people to email me their entries. So I can post it up for all to read.
And sure, I'll be posting the winners' entries up on my next blog post over the weekend. :D
So The finalist send you their entries as well? Or do you just want the winners stories?
I hope tokyo pop doesn't vanish, it would be a shame. But considering how much Manga is out there, I really wish they would do a jump magazine like Viz is doing to get some of their less known series out and about. Or one that's managa from around the world, not just from Japan. That would be really cool.
I got all the winner's stories, meeps. I'll be posting it in a separate entry over the weekend. :)
Yeah, and I have no idea what TP is going to do now. :( I wish them the best of luck, and an anthology from ANYWHERE about anything would be SWEET.
Kay! Thank you!
*gets excited* I wanna read the winners entries~! |
