The Dreaming: The End, or is it? [Dec. 19th, 2007|10:39 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
[Current Mood | busy]

It's seven days from Christmas Day, and I gotta announce that "The Dreaming" vol. 3 is finally out, both on bookshelves and online!

You can buy vol1, vol2 and vol3 here on Amazon.com! Previews are here at TOKYOPOP's site.

IMPORTANT: Please look on the VERY LAST PAGE of volume 3. There's a SECRET there, to be revealed on the TOKYOPOP site soon, hopefully January. Or you can just go here, and the update here.

So, "The Dreaming" trilogy is officially over
(at least the manga written and drawn by me is).

It's been a long and busy three years, and so much has changed in that time. My art has also improved, though the results of that can probably only be seen in "Odd Thomas: In Odd We Trust", the book I'm working on now.

  • Along with "The Dreaming", I was one of the first people to be published in TOKYOPOP's OEL 3-book manga program, and judging from the changes in their publishing plans, probably one of the last.
  • I started work on "The Dreaming" in October 2004, and finished the last of its pages in August 2007.
  • Book 1 was 172 pages, book 2 was 181 pages, and book 3 was also 181 pages. Each had 7 chapters.
  • This makes a total of 534 mostly greyscale-toned pages, including 21.5 black and white chapter pages.
  • The average chapter length was 25.43 pages. The longest chapter was chapter 20, at 35 pages. The shortest was chapter 21, at 17 pages.
  • I worked a total worktime of 22 months, which makes an average of 24.3 pages a month, 7.33 months for each book. That makes about a chapter a month.
  • In a single month, this means 1 week for the pencils, 1.5 weeks for the inks, and another 1.5 weeks for the tones.
  • My favourite chapter break is chapter 2 in book 1, and my favourite dress is the one the unconscious girl is wearing on the "To Be Continued..." page of book 1.

----------

  • First, I'd like to thank all my wonderful fans for your interest and support in this series. I give special kudos to all the people who emailed me - I replied to most of your emails, and will continue doing so. I apologise if I haven't replied to yours in particular (I get on average 1-2 fan mails a day), but I'll try my best.

  • Secondly, I want to thank all the editors who worked on this series, namely Jodi, Carol Fox and Paul Morrissey. Carol especially, because she spend the most time on it. Thanks to all the senior editors who kept an eye on things too, and also Stu Levy who greenlit this project.

  • An apology and thanks to Katie Huang and Paul Aeria, who helped me with the toning for book 3, but unfortunately didn't get their names in the credits because of a printing error. Nobody was at fault - there was some confusion with the 1 month delay in street date because of the SECRET on the last page. So I thank Paul and Katie here instead.

  • A big thanks to TOKYOPOP Senior Editor Jenna Winterburg too, for telling me about the SECRET you'll find at the end of volume 3. Thanks for the TOKYOPOP marketing folks who came up with that too.

  • Thanks to Emily Shao, for maintaining "The Dreaming" Fanlisting, and also my Normal Fanlisting. I really appreciate it.

  • Kudos to all the librarians who pushed this book, and recommended it to their enthusiastic little manga minions. Thanks to Scholastic for ordering 45,000 copies for their book club too. You've got to get them reading when they're young...

  • May I also thank all the reviewers who gave it a good review, and all the bloggers and journalists who interviewed me for their blogs and/or articles! You can see a full list of them on my site.

  • Thanks to all the news sites I read for mentioning me and my book, including MangaBlog, Heidi at The Beat, ComiPress and the now defunct Love Manga (If a news site I don't read mentioned my book too, then I thank you as well. Hopefully you were saying something nice, teehee.)

  • Last of all, a big THANKYOU to TOKYOPOP for publishing this series, including every single person who worked on it. If you know anything about book publishing, there's probably quite a few people whose names didn't get mentioned because of the "behind the scenes" nature of their job. I want to say: your efforts are appreciated.

----------

I hope everyone (and my fans) continues to support me in the other works I do.
Merry Christmas everyone, and Happy 2008 New Year!!

WOW Super Congrats!!! I would love to do an interview sometime once I start Calling Manga Island back up. You've done a great job on the summary of what the 3 book deal entailed, but it would be cool to do a postmortem/what's next?! interview. I really dig your work, so I hope that we get more and more comics! I am still waiting for your martial arts book!
Happy Holidays, best wishes!

Oh yeah thanks for your continued support of Psy-Comm as well. You rock!

Oh, that'll be great, Tony. I'd love to do an interview. I'm curious about what the other OEL authors are doing too... it would be great to see where everyone is headed.
Ofcourse I support Psy-Comm. I support all the OEL books, and will continue doing so. :D Happy Holidays too.

Congratulations! I've really enjoyed the first two volumes of The Dreaming so far. You've done a fantastic job, the first volume was particularly creepy and a thrill ride. I'm looking forward to the third and final volume and find out how it all ties up (and also this secret).

Really amazing and admire your dedication to your craft and for drawing well over 500+ pages already, being consistent and also improving as well. Can't wait to see Odd Thomas when that comes out.

Best wishes to you, too, for the festive holidays! :)

I had to go to the bookstore three times to get volume 3, how appropriate! I checked the Tokyopop website, thought it said the 11th, went to barnes and noble on the 12... not there. got told release date was next tuesday. Went again on tuesday, got told shipment hadn't come in. Went in on wensday, found the book, one copy on the shelves, grabbed, ran to cash register before anything else could go wrong! And then cause I was driving mom around to appointments and christmas shopping, I didn't get to finish till after midnight. A good read, and I'm seriously giving thought to participating in that secret on the last page...

I just received Volume 3 yesterday and finished it in about a half hour lol it was very, very good and I have been waiting a long time to see the completion of the story.

I'm curious if you could explain to me what your intended purpose was for the ending? Or rather, your intended meaning. I understand completely if you aren't able to explain it here without spoiling it, but if you could offer some insight, I would really like to know.

The ending was definitely not what I was expecting. At all. From the beginning of the series I had one idea in my head about Jeannie and Amber that I was so sure of and by the end *poof* Anyways, thank you for putting your brilliant work out there :) I have greatly enjoyed the series and look forward to seeing more of your work (esp. if its anything like this! :)

Hey, glad you enjoyed the book! :D

I'm happy to explain the ending a bit more, but I'm not sure what sort of insight you're looking for. If it was a happy ending you were looking for, then I'm afraid there isn't one, because I don't believe ANYONE could have gone through what these girls went through and then came out perfectly fine. The point is, even though the girls physically escaped the school, their psyches are forever bound to that place because of what happened.

I will leave what happened to Amber open-ended. I could have confirmed what had happened to her at the end, but I wanted the readers to draw their own conclusions. As for Jeanie, it's sad, but at the end of the story, her dream life is just much more interesting than her REAL life. She even grows to like visiting the school in her dreams, even though it's a place she ought to hate.

Kinda like Mrs. Skeener, really. Mrs. Skeener (aka Beatrice Spector) should have the most reason to hate the school, but not only does she end up going back, but it ends up being her home and her grave. She fell under the spell of that place (as does Jeanie later on)... which continues despite the whole place having been burnt down now.

I just wanted to say how much I loved the last book, but I had a question (which includes a spoiler):

Is Amber now Mary? Or are they some combination of the two?

I was wondering since after waking up she immediately asked if her sister was Beatrice, and the doctors talking about her losing her memory due to the smoke. And of course, her deciding to take up painting soon after, as well as her formal language (compared to Amber's relatively casual speak prior to the incident). And the friend in England thing. She's from Australia, but randomly has a friend in England whom she runs to visit (Maybe a relative of Mary's?). My theory is is that Amber is completely gone ('I just don't feel like me anymore' as she puts it) and Mary has taken her place, and after being told she's actually Amber and suffering from memory loss, she's decided to just play along. It's a bit crackpot, but that's what I think.

I'm also looking forward to the contest details in January. :3

Oh, I also forgot to mention that Jeanie was extremely protective of her sister throughout all the books, but in the epilogue, she says she doesn't care/mind that she left, which I'm taking as that she knows Amber is no longer Amber, and therefore no longer has feelings for her.

Thanks, Dee. *hugs*
And yeah... having "The Dreaming" over is kind of like one stage of my life done or something. Spent three years on it... wow, now that's commitment LOL. I hope you check out "Odd Thomas" when it comes out at the SDCC in 2008! I hope my next project pitch after that goes well too...
Merry Xmas and a Happy 2008!!

The Dreaming Vol 3~ I'm Late ^__^;;

(Link)

Hello quieeniechan! It's me, Chelsea. I finally have the Dreaming Volume 3, and read it madly. After I came home, I was shouting and yelling and jumping with glee, while holding it. I just gotta say, IT WAS SO SURPRISING!!!!! All of my questions finally answered, and the story finally told! The prolouge made me sad, because I really wanted Jeanie and Amber to be together forever, after hearing what happened to Mary and Beatrice.

Their expressions in 'the past' chapters were very good. The anger seemed so real. And the eyes were beautiful. Your drawings have changed and kind of matured, too. I kinda of understand why Mary left..... it made me so sad, though. The last part of The Haunted Linen Cupboard was hilarious. Bishie beam!!!! Heh heh heh heh, and 'The Scream' part was hilarious as well. I hope you're happily drinking Mountain Dew. ^__^

As for the writing contest, I have permission to enter, but will not. Even though I LOVE fiction writitng, I think my 10 year old brain will surely not be good to teenager brains. T__T

Happy New Year, and best wishes!!!!

Thanks, Chelsea. I'm glad you liked the last volume of "The Dreaming" - especially the ending. After waiting for 3 years, the series is finally over. Gorsh, how old were you when you first posted on this LJ? Glad you liked the "Haunted Linen Cupboard", hehe. I didn't have much time to spend on that section, but it'll not be quite the same without it at the end.

I feel sad you won't be entering the writing contest... it would be fun to do something short, even just for practice. If you decide to enter, I'll be looking for your entry. :)

And I quit Mountain Dew... making me gain weight... T__T

Quick question, sorry!

I know the details haven't been released yet, but will the contest be open to everyone, or just Americans? Because it would suck if that was the case, as I wouldn't be able to enter.

I'm afraid it'll probably only be open to Americans at this point, because it's mean to be like a "Rising Stars of Pop Fiction" kind of contest. I think it sucks too, but there's no telling - the details haven't been finalised yet and won't be until the contest is launched.

But I will try and push for non-Americans to be able to enter. :D

Really Chilling!!!

Hello!

I just wanted to say, that as always, you are really the Queen of Manga horror. Once again, the story totally blew my mind as to wear it was going, and even now, I have a lasting chill down my spine when i think of the story. It is almost as if the manga is the school, and like the students, one can really leave a part of themselves there! I don't think i've ever contemplated a manga as much as this one before. The depth you gave the characters really made it easy to empathize with them as well. I know i seem to be repeating myself, but this truly, truly has to be one of the most haunting stories I've read, period.

Also, thanks so much for the contest opportunity! The sounds like fun!

I'm looking forward to Odd Thomas!!!!

Hope you are having a great New Year!

(sorry for the long post ^^;;;;)

Just finished the third volume and wanted to pop in and say thanks for the wonderful ride. When I picked up the first volume of The Dreaming earlier in 2007 I was at a point in manga where I was getting sick of the magical girl/everyone ends up with the perfect guy/perfect ending genres. I wanted nothing short of a psychological conundrum and yours fit the bill to the extent where I picked up the second volume shortly after. I'm looking forward to Odd Thomas; the two sketches on the Dean Koontz site look great. Exciting! \(*o*)/
