The Dreaming: Fanlisting! [Mar. 9th, 2006|11:20 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
[Current Mood | anxious]

But first, a reminder.

Booksigning in Canberra: There's going to be a book signing for "The Dreaming" in Canberra, on Saturday March 11th. The place is Impact Comics, and it's a “Aussie Comic Creators – Wonder Women” event, 3 days after International Women's Day. Click here for the details.

What: Book signing for "The Dreaming"
Called: "Aussie Comic Creators – Wonder Women”, also meet Trudy Cooper (Platinum Grit), Nicola Scott (Penciller for alot of US comics) and Liz Argall (Writer for Aussie Anthologies)
When: Saturday, March 11th, 12:30pm
At: Impact Comics!
Address: Level 1, 45 East Row, Canberra ACT 2601
Phone: (02) 6248-7335
Website: http://www.impactcomics.com.au/events.html

Fanlisting: Many thanks to Emily Shao, who created a fanlisting for myself, and for "The Dreaming"! Very nice of you, Emily, and now I've got an excuse to create a valid mailing list and send art or pages out to people's emails. I've tried creating a mailing list before, but gave up when I found that people either had addresses that constantly bounced, or some joker put bogus addresses into the text field. Well, now that there's a fanlisting, I can mail things out to people without necessarily having to put things on my server. You see, I create a fair bit of art without putting it on my Livejournal (more for my essays and musings), and I'm genuinely tired of having bits and pieces of free-floating art that aren't "grand" enough to put on LJ, and yet take up server space (I'm also running out of coherent filenames on the computer to store them). It would probably be easier to send things through email where no server space is required to store the images.

My fanlisting: http://tenshi_789.byethost13.com/natural/index.php
"The Dreaming" fanlisting: http://tenshi_789.byethost13.com/adream/

The Two-Dollar Deal: This is an 8-page story for "Generation 2006", an Australian anthology coming out from Poshua. It's due in June so I have plenty of time to work on it, but I thought: better early than late. I wasn't going to put online until I finished it all, because my new website has a certain arrangement that makes it a pain to link art and pages to my livejournal, but now that there's a fanlisting, I can probably send it around through the fanlisting mailing list (Unless you want to join the fanlisting but not get any emails).

Hi Queenie. My name's Tintin (we share an editor!). I was hoping for a favor if you've got time: if you, as a comics creator and authority on manga and manga fandom could comment on my lj about the benefits of drawing OEL left to right, instead of right to left (or vice versa, if you think so) over in my lj? http://tinpan.livejournal.com/38548.html
Please leave a quick intro of yourself too so we know who you are!.

Thanks so much! Hope you're not too busy.

Thanks for answering (I didn't think you'd answer)! Where exactly do I go to read those other short stories? Are they anything like THe Dreaming? Are you thinking about making another manga (tell me ahead of time so I'll be ready for it)?

You just go to the site http://www.queeniechan.com/

All my manga is there. I think when you get to the site, you'll know what to do.

They're nothing like "The Dreaming" though - you'll probably have to see for yourself whether you like it or not. And sure, I'm always thinking about making another manga; whether online or in print. Right now, though, I've got to finish "The Dreaming" first.

Hey,Queenie Chan, I have something that's been really bothering me for only two days (but I'm going to pull out my hair soon!) Are you interested in any other manga author's book? Like, do you like someone else's manga and who's and why? PLease reply because I seriously want to know!

Hey? What do you mean by that? Are you asking who are my favourite manga artists? If you are, then #1 is Osamu Tezuka, who did Astroboy. His "Phoenix" and "Bhuddha" series are big favourites of mine. Apart from him, there are a handful of other guys I admire, but the only ones whose work is available in English is Rumiko Takahashi, Adatchi Mitsuru and Naoki Urusawa. There is some more off-beat stuff, but they're probably hard to find. :D

I'm sorry!!! You sounded a little offended when you replyed. I'v never read Astroboy, though I have seen on T.V. and at book stores. You're right, the art does look pretty good. If you don't mind, here's another question: Have you met another author before and who? Please tell!!;P

Nah, don't worry, I wasn't offended. I just didn't know what you were asking. XD And no, I've nevermet another author and/or artist before - none that I particularly admire anyway.

Sorry if what I wrote sounded a little bewidered, but thanx so much for replying (tell me if I ever get too naggy). I really like Hana-Kimi(have you heard of it;it's very popular), and sappy little love stories about goody-two shoes falling in love with bad-boys ( I fall for them everytime!!!). Here's another question:Why did you choose to write a horror manga? I mean, all the other female manga authors I know or have read about always write about love, comedy (and the occasional kung-fu).

I'm afraid I haven't read Hana-kimi (at 25, methinks I'm a bit too old for it), and I'm definately not a fan of sappy love stories. XD As for why I chose to write a horror manga, I actually write a whole range of other things. I've got a bunch of short manga online at http://www.queeniechan.com/ where I draw all sorts of other stories (including cute, but not sappy, love stories). I guess I write horror to challenge myself, but above all, because my tastes don't run towards "chick lit". I like more masculine genres. Action adventure is good. I love fantasy stories, especially with lots of adventuring. Gritty thrillers and crime stories are great. I absolutely ADORE Westerns - the more violent, the better.

Besides, while alot of female manga authors write love/comedy/kungfu, it doesn't mean that these are the things that women like reading the best. I know alot of women/girls who dislike romantic comedies, and want to read what the boys are reading. I guess when publishers put out romantic comedies, they're aiming at a sector of the girl market that is always predictable (like sappy love stories). Mind you, there's nothing wrong with liking sappy love stories, though it'll be a tragedy if sappy love stories are all you ever read.

Uhhhh... I didn't mean for my interset in books to sound so weird (your reply kinda made me feel embarrassed). I don't think 25 is old at all (but for Hana-Kimi, it may). I can kinda see your point on why you chose to do a horror manga. Someday, I want to be a manga author too, but horror is way too hard for me. I can never tell any good scary stories, so I'll stick with things like fantasy, love, and always a bit of comedy. Hey, if you don't mind me ask'in, why does The Dreaming only come in a three series? Is the mystery of the school that easy and that short?

Hehehe...don't feel embaressed. I suggest you do what interests you. Jumping around on genres interest me and so I do it alot, but if you're not thrilled by the idea of genre-hopping, it's best to just stick to what you like. And besides, one day you may become interested in drawing horror. You never know it with things like that.

As for why "The Dreaming" comes in a 3-book series, it's because that was the way the contract with TOKYOPOP was originally created. And actually, the backstory of the school is very complicated, as you'll see in book2 and 3. I just don't want to drag the story on any longer than is necessary, and besides, I have other series I want to do RIGHT after I finish "The Dreaming".

Hye, please tell me what you're going to write after the dreaming!!!! More horror? Fantasy? Romance? (The possibilities are endless, huh?) Would you have wanted The Dreaming to last longer than just 3 books? The first time I read your manga, I noticed you characters never look really cartoony. Other manga authors make the character's eyes disappear when they're angry or freaked out or something like that. Why don't you?

-AnonymousQ

I already know what I want to write - I have about four 3-book stories lined up, in no particular order. The one I want to do first is a drama though, and somewhat dark, about a family secret - the main character is a teenage girl and there is an element of romance in it as well, but mainly drama. And no, I don't really want "The Dreaming" to be any longer than it has to be.

And as for "cartoony", I suppose you mean characters going SD all of a sudden and things like that. Well, while I've got nothing against that in some manga, I've never been comfortable with doing it myself. It's probably because it feels like lazy cartooning to me. If you want to draw someone angry or freaked out, then why not just give them the correct facial expressions? That's not to say SD-ing isn't effective, but as far as I can see, I can only accept it if it fits the author's style and the mood of the story. Some artist have really cartoony styles to begin with, and so SD-ing fits in well with their art. However, some artists have pretty realistic styles, and that's where I really dislike seeing SD-ing. You have this realistic-looking person, complex toning and all, and then in the next panel, they're a 3-inch dwarf. It's too sudden a shift in mood, not to mention that the characters lose their consistency. So while alot of artists use SD-ing, it's important to remember that only in SOME circumstances that it's effective.

Your next manga sounds interesting. What are you planning to call it? The "family secret" part of the story reminds me of the secrets in the dreaming. Is that what it's supposed to be like? As for all the SD info- I see your point.., it does seem kinda lazy for someone to do that(even if it does look kinda cute/funny). I'd love to read any new manga you'll have out in the future... Are you thinking at all of doing a action/fighting manga? I think with your style of drawing, people fighting would...look cool!!!! Take some of this in mind....

Well, this story is only going to happen if it finds a publisher, so I won't hedge any bets yet. :D I'm glad you're interested in this story! It's nothing like "The Dreaming" though - the fanily secret is rather straight-forward, but it's shared between 3 generations of a family. It's not a "fantastical" secret though - it's a rather realistic and serious story. But that's a spoiler. :P

And I've attempted to do action/fighting manga before. Got rejected by TOKYOPOP, because in 2003 they weren't looking for "shounen fighting manga" (that has since changed). The pitch is up on my site http://www.queeniechan.com/manga_achineseghoststory

I'd like to do action adventure, because that's what I like. But that's only if the publisher says "yes". :( So far, no luck.

I really think an action manga by someone like yourself would be totally cool! Do you know what the story for it will be if you get to publish a story? An adventure story sounds so really exciting... what do you want it to be about? A journey or quest of some sort? Will they be looking for something or trying to find something or something like that (too many somethins' eh?....=P). Hey...what is you your favorite movie( make sure it's well known). I'm watching one right now and I'm stupidly curious enough to ask.....^-^

I have an adventure story in tow (several actually), but none fits in 3 volumes, so if it's to do with publishing, I'll probably go through my 3 volume stories first. Faster to finish.

A journey or quest is pretty much the story for one of them (Keeper of the Soul, the unfinished story on my site, because it's going to be a very long story), and they will be looking for someone (or at least start off looking for someone). And I don't really have a favourite movie, though I have favourite movie directors. Roman Polanski, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa... lots of others too. I'm a bit of a movie buff, so quality movies matter a big deal to me.

Hello Queenie Chan!!! I just bought The dreaming and saw the website at the back and decided to send you a note ( or what ever this is). I also read some of the other stories you have posted on your site and I thought can you answera question. In your story A short Ghost Story, what does it all mean? The red, the suicide, everything!!!!

(Link)

Actually, you're the first person to not understand what's going on in "A Short Ghost Story", so I'm not sure how to explain it. It's a supernatural story, meaning that some things just have no logical explanation. If you really need one, there is a Chinese legend that says that if someone commits suicide with a great hatred in their heart, they should dress themselves in red when they commit suicide, because then they will come back as a vengeful ghost to wreck havoc on the living. Which is explained in the story anyway, so I'm not sure what you don't get about it. :P

Heya! Welcome to the fanlisting! For that matter, the fanlisting doesn't actually do anything, except get a list of people who like my work on the Internet somewhere. :P I sometimes send emails around on the mailing list there, so that's what I mostly use it for.

So if you're worried about it - don't be. You don't have to do ANYTHING, except get the occasional email about something. :P

What is the little picture I always see next to an e-mail when it 's not from someone anonymous? How do I get one? Does it have to do something with my network or something like that?

As for the other stuff, you must be completely new to the web. What this is here is a "livejournal", aka a blog. It's like an online diary. The messages you've been posting here is like part of a bulletin board - it's NOT emailing or anything like that. Anyway, if you want a pic beside your message, then you have to have a Livejournal account. You can get one here at http://www.livejournal.com/ - it has an FAQ that will answer all your questions.
